When Women Poker News caught up with Ruth Hall late on Day 1 of the $2,500 Venetian Women In Poker High Roller Event, she was stepping away from the tournament, saying she planned to rest. But something brought her back — maybe the size of the prize pool, perhaps the significance of the moment.
She returned, fired a second bullet… and bagged 168,000 chips, placing her 14th out of 39 players remaining.
Now she enters Day 2 with more than just a deep run in mind.
Earlier in the day, Ruth shared that she lost her husband, James “Keith” Hall, earlier this year after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She spoke of him with love, strength, and quiet grace, offering words of thanks, remembrance, and connection.
And while she never needed to say it directly, one truth came through clearly:
This one is for you.
It was the kind of statement that doesn’t need to be amplified to hit hard. It says everything.

According to the WPA leaderboard, Ruth is currently ranked third in the Player of the Year race — but if she cashes this event, it will mark her fourth cash in just five Ladies Week events played, a pace that could rocket her to the top and make her extremely difficult to catch.
But even if she doesn’t make the final table, she’s already given us something unforgettable: a reminder that poker isn’t just about chips and cards. It’s about heart, resilience, and playing for something bigger than yourself.
Full coverage, interviews, and final table updates are available now at Women Poker News, the official media partner of the event.
